MUZZLE ENERGY
First thing you need to know before you start shooting is how
powerful is my air gun, well air pistols have a legal limit of six foot pounds (
6ft lbs ) muzzle energy, and air rifles have a legal limit of twelve foot pounds
( 12ft lbs ) muzzle energy, any thing over these limits will require you to have
a firearms certificate, so take my advice and check your guns power output.
First thing to do is weigh the pellets you intend to use ( if
you don't have the means to weigh your pellets find them in the chart below and
use this figure in your calculations, but remember the weights listed are only a
average guide ) then beg, steal, buy or borrow a chronograph and fire
five shots through the chronograph, take the highest reading ( for
legal reasons ) and work out your guns muzzle energy with this formula.
Example Your pellets velocity is 440
fps and it weighs 12.80 grains.
Velocity (440fps) X Velocity (440fps) =
193600 X Pellet weight (12.80 gr) = 2478080 * divided
by 450240
= 5.50 ft lbs muzzle energy. This is the average
power level of your gun.
